Passenger Car

2026-10-03 13:40:02

Passenger car (English: passenger car) refers to a motor vehicle designed and technically constructed primarily for carrying passengers and their personal luggage or temporary belongings, featuring no more than 9 seats including the driver's seat. Passenger cars represent one of the two core vehicle classification pillars alongside commercial vehicles. They make up the backbone of China's automotive market, encompassing the most common everyday body types such as sedans, SUVs, and MPVs.

Statutory Definition and Classification

Under the GB/T 3730.1 national standard, passenger cars are categorised into 11 types based on structural attributes such as bodywork, roof construction, seating layout, and doors. These comprise saloon passenger cars, convertible saloons, limousines, coupés, convertibles, hatchbacks, estate cars/station wagons, multi-purpose passenger cars (MPVs), forward-control passenger cars, off-road vehicles, and special-purpose passenger cars.

In day-to-day use, passenger cars are also classified by body configuration into one-box, two-box, and three-box silhouettes. A three-box car features visibly separated compartments for the engine, passenger cabin, and boot, as seen in conventional sedans. A two-box car integrates the boot area with the passenger cabin, as seen in the Volkswagen Golf. A one-box vehicle adopts a single continuous form, housing all three areas within a unified profile.

Market Standing

Passenger cars form the overwhelming majority of China's automotive market. In 2025, passenger car production and sales in China surpassed the 30 million-unit milestone for the first time, recording 30.27 million and 30.103 million units respectively—reflecting year-on-year growth of 10.2% and 9.2%—and retaining global top spot for consecutive years. Out of this total, domestic Chinese brands delivered 20.936 million units, capturing a market share of 69.5%.

In the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) sector, cumulative retail sales of new energy passenger cars hit 12.809 million units in 2025, accounting for 53.9% of total passenger car retail volume. Domestic NEV penetration approached 60%, signalling that China's passenger car market has decisively transitioned into an "NEV-dominated" era.

Vehicle Segments

In terms of size segmentation, the GB/T 3730.1 standard does not mandate statutory segment benchmarks. The prevalent A00, A0, A, B, C, and D segment naming conventions originated from Volkswagen's proprietary platform architecture, which gained widespread industry adoption owing to the brand's immense market presence in China.

Under current recommended guidelines, Segment A00 (micro/city cars) typically measure under 3.8 metres in length with a wheelbase below 2.5 metres; Segment A0 (superminis/small cars) span 3.5–4.2 metres; Segment A (compact cars) span 4.0–4.6 metres; Segment B (mid-size cars) span 4.3–4.8 metres; Segment C (executive/large cars) span 4.55–5.0 metres; and Segment D (full-size luxury cars) exceed 4.8 metres. For three-box sedans, overall length limits are extended by 0.2 metres accordingly.
